Ingredients
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 lbs. ground beef
  • 1 slice bread
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tblsp. curry powder
  • 1 1/2 tblsp. sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 3 tblsp. chutney
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 tblsp. vinegar or lemon juice
  • 6 almonds, quartered
  • 1 egg
  • 4 bay leaves, or peel of 1 lemon, grated
Directions

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Saute beef with onions until meat is brown. (if beef is very lean, you may need to grease the skillet.) Soak the bread in half the milk; then mash the slice with a fork.

Combine all the ingredients except the egg, remaining milk, and the bay leaves. (if you're using lemon peel, go ahead and mix it in). Spread the mixture in a greased casserole and tuck in the bay leaves here and there. Bake for 1 hour, then beat the egg with the remaining half-cup of milk and pour over the casserole. Return to oven for another half hour. Serve with rice and chutney.
