Born in the northern Ugandan town of Pabbo, Kwoyelo was believed to be fourth in command of the Lord's Resistance Army during the group's insurgency that began in 1987.
In March 2009, Mr Kwoyelo was captured after he was injured in a firefight with the Ugandan People's Defense Force (UPDF).
In July 2011, the International Crimes Division of the High Court of Uganda -created under the 2006 Juba Peace Process - formally charged Thomas Kwoyelo with 53 counts of crimes against humanity including murder, willful killing, kidnap with intent to kill and destruction of property purportedly carried out between between 1987 and 2005 in his native Pabbo and Lamogi locality.
