Description of Work:
As the maker of over  five feature length films, Malian director Cheik Oumar Sissoko has established himself as a leader in African film.

Nyamanton, made in 1986, was his first film. He struck hard at the harsh realities of life in Mali that are made worse by local bureaucracy. He followed up that work with Finzan (1990), a work that explores patriarchal oppression in a Mali torn between tradition and modernity.

Sissoko is perhaps best known for his 1999 film, Genesis, an adaption of the Bible book of the same name. In the film, Sissoko compares the inter group strife of Mali to the conflicts of the various tribes of the bible.
