Description of Work:
From 2000-2003 before his appointment as ambassador to the United States, Diop was a diplomatic advisor to Malian Presidents Alpha Oumar Konare and Amadou Toumani Toure. While working closely with the presidents Diop was chairmen of the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and the WAEMU (West African Economic and Monetary Union). During this time Diop also worked on monitoring initiatives for the African Union in which Mali played an active role in creating. As diplomatic advisor Diop was a member of several national delegations that attended regional and international conferneces to discuss issues such as regional integration, economic development, peace and security. In 2000 and 2001, Diop oversaw Mali's participation in the United Nations Security Council and served as a memeber of the Steering Committee of the Partnership for Africa's Development. From 1999-2000 Diop worked as the advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of political and diplomatic issues. From 1998-1999 Diop held the position of counselor at the Malian Embassy in Belgium where he was in charge of mulitlateral cooperation. Diop played an active role in negotiations between the ACP (African Caribbean and Pacific) States and the European Union with regard to the Partnership Agreement for Development signed in Contonou in 2000. Prior to that position he spent several years at the direction of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of implementing and monitoring the European Development Funds financial programs in Mali. In 1988 Diop worked as an Intern at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was recruited by the same department in 1990. Diop was born in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo). He is married and has five children.
