Betty Kaunda, born Beatrice Kaweche Banda, was the wife of Zambia's first president Kenneth Kaunda.
Betty Kaunda was born in Chitulika village, Mpika in 1928. She married Kenneth Kaunda when she was 18 years old.
She dedicated her life to her family and helping those in need. She was a "true Christian with a very good heart" said a member of the United Church of Zambia.
She has been described as a “true mother of the nation who did not interfere in state affairs” by veteran diplomat and politician, Vernon Mwaanga, in his book The Long Sunset: My Reflections.
