Rupiah Banda was deputy president of Zambia under President Levy Mwanawasa from 2006 until the latter's death in 2008, when he became the candidate of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy to replace Mwanawasa.

Born on in Gwanda, Zimbabwe, he was educated in Ethiopia, Sweden and the United Kingdom and has served as a Zambian diplomat and top civil servant for much of his life. He was permanent representative to the United Nations in the 1970s, before becoming foreigh mnister.
