At the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Bekele won both short and long distance races.

In 2004, he broke three world records: 5000m indoor, 5000m outdoor, and 10,000m outdoor.

He won a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and is considered one of Ethiopia's top contenders for another gold in the 2008 games.
