Koech was born in Cheplanget, Kenya.  He is married with one daughter.

As a runner Koech specializes in the steaple chase, for which he won a bronze in Athen's 2004 Olympic Games.  In the 2008 Olympics he will be competing in the men's 3,000m steeplechase.

In 2007, Koech received gold in Hengelo, Eugene, Ostrava, Stockholm and Brussels as well as at the IAAF World Athletics final, thus he is considered among the best of his Olympic team.
