Organization Details
Established in 1958, UNECA is the regional arm of the United Nations, mandated to support the economic and social development of Africa, foster regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. UNECA has facilitated the establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern Africa (PTA), now the Community of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) as well as the African Development Bank (ADB). ECA seeks to apply a partnership approach, meaning it forges synergies with African intergovernmental organizations, UN bodies and specialized agencies, donor countries, African universities, research centers and civil society groups. Most of the collaborations involve research, advisory services, sponsorship of seminars and workshops, information sharing, advocacy, and assistance in capacity building.
