Based on her own research and interviews, Knight tells the story of militiamen who follow a dreadlocked reincarnation of Christ, of exorcisms, sorcery, of pygmies who are owned by their masters.

She also writes of the sprititual relationship between people and their environment, and how it's being destroyed, of timber companies exploting the rainforest, and of violence rooted in oil.
