The Bardo Museum has the world’s largest collection of Roman mosaics.  Even more spectacular than the collection itself is the structure of the Bey palace that encloses the art.  Though Rome is best known for its engineering and war efforts, the empire did leave behind some very impressive artwork.

There are four floors in the Bardo, and it can take hours to absorb all of the work that the museum has to offer.

The most unique displays of the Bardo are in the Ship Rooms, which contain artifacts from a Greek shipwreck.  The Mahdia sunk not far from Carthage en route to Rome after the crew found themselves lost in a violent storm in 1 AD.  The objects weren’t discovered until 1907, but are surprisingly intact.

The Bardo has many walls covered in old tile patterns from inside various mosques.
