MEND was launched in January 2006 when members of the group revealed that they were responsible for capturing foreign oil workers. Since then the group has been responsible for numerous disruptions and sabatoges in the Niger Delta. They have been responsible for pipeline bombings and kidnappings.

The group is composed of several militant groups with common goal of reducing oil output of the Niger Delta and gaining "resource control" in a way that would be beneficial to the citizens of the Niger Delta region. These groups include groups such as the Movement for the Survival of the Ogani People (MOSOP) and the Ijaw Youth Council.

MEND's official spokesperson is Jomo Gbomo.
