Apps for Africa is contest ( running from July 1 to August 31 , 2010 ) to showcase the talent of developers and entrepreneurs  in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. This contests aims to highlight the power of digital technology in creating a better world.

Contestants are given the task of building the best digital tools to address the problems that so many of their countries face. These tools can target a variety of platforms including government, education and health.

The apps will be judged on the following criteria :

1. Usefulness to the citizens, civil society organization or government of East Africa
2. Potential for application to be useful for other institutions in the world
3. Appeal of the application from a usability perspective
4. Inventive and original nature of the application

This contest is sponsored by Ihub, AppAfrica , SODNET and the U.S. State Department.
