Bronchitis treatments with emedicine amoxicillin

Antibiotics amoxicillin is used to treat bronchitis in those patients whose infection is caused by Bordetella pertussis or patient suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria including H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci.

This medicine is one of the semi-synthetic penicillins discovered by Beecham scientists. It has three ionizable groups. It is marketed under many trade names including Actimoxi, Alphamox, Amocla, AMK, Amoksibos, Amoxiclav Sandoz, Amoxidal, Amoxil, Amoxin, Amoksiklav, Amoxibiotic, Amoxicilina, Apo-Amoxi, Augmentin (with clavulanic acid), and so on… It was approved by the American FDA in January 2008 for taking as once daily dosing form. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It inhibits cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up a major component of the cell walls of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Bronchitis can be acute or chronic depending on the situation. It is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes, the airways that connect the trachea to the lungs. Protracted bacterial bronchitis is describe as a cough occurring for more than 8 weeks, with a positive broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL), that can be treated effectively with antibiotics. It is usually caused by streptococcus pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, or moraxella catarrhalis.

Antibiotics should only be prescribed if examination of gram stained sputum shows large numbers of bacteria present. Only about 5 - 10% of bronchitis cases are caused by a bacterial infection. However, most cases of acute bronchitis are caused by viruses; thus antibiotics are not recommended since they are only effective against bacteria and not virus. Even with no treatment, most cases of acute bronchitis resolve quickly. Acute bronchitis is characterized by the development of a cough, with or without the production of sputum or mucus that is expectorated or coughed up from the respiratory tract. Acute bronchitis often occurs during the course of an acute viral illness such as the common cold or influenza. buy amoxicillin

On the other hand chronic bronchitis, which is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is characterized by the presence of a productive cough that lasts for 3 months or more per year for at least 2 years. It develops most often due to recurrent injury to the airways caused by inhaled irritants. Smoking cigarette of course is the most common cause; the other possible causes include air pollution, irritating fumes or dust and occupational exposure to irritants, and cold air. Around 5% of the people have chronic bronchitis, and it is two times more common in man than woman.

The most successful approach for preventing chronic bronchitis and other forms of COPD is to keep away from smoking cigarettes and also avoid other forms of tobacco.
