Mount Fogo is the highest peak in Cape Verde, rising nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. It is still active and the main cone last reupted in 1675. A susidiary vent erupted in 1995, but it is very safe to travel around the volanco at this point.
The island of Fogo is almost entirely round and the volcano can be seen from a great distance, as it visually dominates the landscape. Hikers often come from great distances and there are many great tour deals that can be arranged.
