Career

Mphela rejoined Supersport United in late November 2006 from French club RC Strasbourg. He also briefly played for Stade Reims.

He started his career at Jomo Cosmos.

He has represented South Africa fourteen times, scoring six goals. He scored South Africa's only goal in the 3–1 defeat against Tunisia in the 2008 African Nations Cup.

Perhaps Mphela's greatest moment came in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup third-place playoff against Spain. The match was a dull affair void of any real chances. Mphela's introduction changed that. He scored a goal in the 73rd minute, which looked like being enough until Spanish goals in the 88th and 89th minute looked to have stolen the match from the South Africans.

Mphela then produced arguably the goal of the tournament with a free kick from 30 yards, which turned out to be the last action of the 90 mins, sending the game into extra time.
