Born under British colonial rile, even as a child Chirwa was aware the the injustice she faced as an African and a girl. While struggling for her education, she met and fell in love with teacher and activist Orton Chiraw. From then they worked together as their country embarked on independence. She was a campaigner, politician, lawyer, wife and mother that left a lasting mark on Malawian politics.
