Fatu Gayflor began singing in her home village of Kakata in Northwestern Liberia. As a member of the Lorma ethnic group she was instructed in ritual and song so began singing at a very young age. In 1978 the Liberian National Cultural Troupe discovered her at twelve years old while touring to find new talent. She later became the lead singer of the troupe.
She recorded her first two albums in Liberia singing traditional songs with local and imported instruments aiming to appeal to young people. Due to a civil war in her country she recorded her next album in the Ivory Coast. Fatu is known as the golden voice of Liberia. Now a resident of the U.S. she performs for Liberian ceremonies and celebrations in North America.
