Description of Work:  Serigne Saliou Mbacké was the fifth Caliph of the Mouride brotherhood and is generally accredited as growing the Sufi Islamic group from over a million to an extensive international network.

The last surviving son of Chiekh Ahamadou Bamba Mbacké, the founder of the Mourides, Saliou Mbacké was born in May 1915. He assumed the role of caliph in the late 1980's when his older brother died.

Mbacké was well known for his political influence and economic weight in Senegal, an important player in regional and African politics. After winning his 2000 election, President Abdoulaye Wade went to Touba, the capital of the Mourides, to pray. Wade named Mbacké as his spiritual adviser. The Mourides' emphasis on hard work and commitment to community facilitated Mbacké's efforts to transition the failing agricultural efforts to economic engagement based on international trade from everywhere from New York and Paris and Dubai and Hong Kong.

Mbacké is seceded by Ahamadou Bamba's oldest grandson Mouhamadou Lamine Bara Mbacké.
