Description of Work:  Botswana, one of Africa's most stable countries, is the continent's longest continuous multi-party democracy. It is relatively free of corruption and has a good human rights record. It is also the world's largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation. Festus Mogae is the former president of Botswana.

Festus Mogae was born in 1939 and trained as an economist at Oxford before occupying senior government posts. He returned to Botswana to work as a civil servant before taking up posts with the International Monetary Fund and the Bank of Botswana. He was vice-president of Botswana from 1992 to 1998. Mr Mogae succeeded Quett Masire when he stepped down in 1998, and after a decade at the helm in April 2008, he stepped down when his second term came to an end.

He was executive director for Anglophone Africa at the IMF and governor of the Bank of Botswana from 1980 to 1981, and has presided over impressive economic growth during his term of service as President. Upon re-election in 2004, Mogae promised to tackle poverty and unemployment, as well as the spread of HIV-Aids, which he pledges to stop in Botswana by 2016.

On July 14, 2007, Mogae said that he intended to resign nine months later, at which point he states that he will hand over the presidency to Vice President Seretse Khama Ian Khama ahead of a general election in October 2009, a poll that Khama and the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) are virtually guaranteed to win.

The BDP has governed since independence in 1966.

The constitution limits the presidential term to 10 years. Mr Khama, the son of Botswana's first president, Sir Seretse Khama, is unlikely to change economic policy or political course, analysts say.
